The long-rumored heavyweight unification bout between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall is closer to becoming a reality. Aspinall, the interim UFC heavyweight champion, recently expressed confidence that he will face Jones in 2025, stating that UFC officials share his optimism.
“I’m very confident that it’s going to happen,” Aspinall said. “I’ve had conversations with the higher-ups in the UFC, and they are also very confident it’s going to happen. I don’t know from Jon’s side, but I know from my side and the UFC’s side, it’s very likely.”
Aspinall’s comments follow Jones’ dominant win over Stipe Miocic at UFC 309, where “Bones” retained his heavyweight title with a third-round knockout. Aspinall, who was cageside for the event, praised Jones’ performance:
“I was very impressed by him… the kick he landed was brutal. To see that up close was incredible.”
Jon Jones Eyes Historic Payday
Jon Jones, widely regarded as one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time, is reportedly negotiating a blockbuster payout for the potential clash.
UFC commentator Jon Anik speculated that Jones could demand $30–50 million for the fight, a figure befitting the magnitude of a heavyweight unification bout.
Anik said:
“What is Jon Jones worth? He deserves that payday because, in heavyweight MMA, anything can happen. You’ve got to pay him what he’s worth.”
Jones himself hinted at ongoing talks, telling The Schmo:
“I’m back in the gym, I’m training, and I feel really great… I’ll be competing in 2025, more than likely.”
The UFC is reportedly considering International Fight Week 2025 in Las Vegas as the ideal stage for this historic fight. With both fighters at the peak of their careers, a Jones-Aspinall matchup could solidify the legacy of the winner as the undisputed heavyweight king.
Fans now await an official announcement, hoping this dream matchup becomes a reality. Stay tuned for updates as negotiations continue.
