Highlights
  • Bo Nickal expressed disappointment in Cormier’s remarks but acknowledged the feedback positively later.
  • Daniel Cormier clarified that his commentary aimed to highlight Bo Nickal’s need for gradual development in the UFC.
  • UFC CEO Dana White backed Cormier’s stance, emphasizing a careful approach to Nickal’s career trajectory.

UFC legend Daniel Cormier has responded to criticism from middleweight prospect Bo Nickal, who was disappointed by Cormier’s commentary during his UFC 309 bout against Paul Craig.

The fight, which ended in a unanimous decision for Nickal, was his most significant victory yet.

However, it drew boos from the Madison Square Garden crowd due to Nickal’s cautious approach and lack of takedown attempts—uncharacteristic for the former NCAA wrestling champion.

During the broadcast, Cormier remarked that Nickal wasn’t ready for middleweight elite like Khamzat Chimaev, sparking controversy. Nickal voiced his dissatisfaction during an interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, calling Cormier’s analysis overly critical and lacking positivity.

In a YouTube video addressing the issue, Cormier expressed surprise at Nickal’s reaction, explaining his intentions. “I like Bo.

I think he’s going to be a champion someday,” Cormier stated. “But my point was simple: let’s not rush him into fights with vastly more experienced opponents. His talent is undeniable, but there’s room for growth.”

Cormier added, “After the fight, some called me a ‘Bo apologist,’ which is ironic because Bo interpreted it as me being overly critical.

I thought he fought well, but I stand by my assessment—he needs time and development before taking on someone like Khamzat.”

UFC CEO Dana White echoed similar sentiments post-fight, emphasizing the importance of strategically managing Nickal’s trajectory in the sport. White noted that the UFC is closely working with Nickal on his fighting style and career progression.

Nickal, now 7-0 in MMA, labeled his performance against Craig “picture-perfect” but acknowledged Cormier’s clarification. He responded on social media, expressing gratitude for the feedback while maintaining confidence in his approach.

Cormier closed his remarks by pointing out the double-edged sword of fame and criticism that comes with being a rising star. “Bo’s going to face scrutiny, but I believe he’ll handle it well. Let’s take our time with him—there’s no need to rush.”
