Javier Mendez, head coach of the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA), recently took time to reflect on the immense legacy of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov. Abdulmanap, who was the father and lifelong trainer of Khabib Nurmagomedov, played a pivotal role in his son’s rise to MMA greatness.

Abdulmanap coached an extraordinary 18 world champions in his lifetime, including Khabib, who many consider one of the greatest fighters in MMA history.

Khabib, famously nicknamed “The Eagle,” retired undefeated with a record of 29-0 and dominated the lightweight division during his time in the UFC.

His victories included high-profile wins over Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje—all of whom he defeated via submission.

However, Abdulmanap tragically passed away in 2020 due to complications from COVID-19, a loss that deeply affected Khabib, his family, and the MMA community.

Javier Mendez, who trained closely with both Khabib and Abdulmanap, expressed his admiration in a moving Instagram post.

Mendez’s gym in San Jose, California, played a significant role in Khabib’s UFC journey. Despite the distance from their home in Dagestan, Abdulmanap fully supported Khabib training under Mendez.

“I had the privilege of knowing Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov… I can confidently say he was the best coach I ever met [and] a remarkable human being,” Mendez wrote.

Mendez praised Abdulmanap for his trust, calling it unique in the world of coaching.

“In a world where many coaches would be protective of their talents, he freely allowed Khabib to pursue his dreams with me,” Mendez shared. He explained that Abdulmanap never interfered but believed in their teamwork, a philosophy fondly referred to as “Father’s Plan.”

Carrying on the Legacy

Although he is no longer here, Abdulmanap’s influence continues to shine in the fighters inspired by his work. Mendez vowed to honor his memory and carry forward the lessons he learned from the late coach.

“Abdulmanap was one of the greatest coaches & great men, and I will always honor his memory,” Mendez added.

Khabib retired from the UFC in 2020, keeping the promise he made to his mother shortly after Abdulmanap’s death.

While he may no longer compete, Khabib’s dominance remains a testament to his father’s guidance, discipline, and unwavering commitment. Abdulmanap’s contributions extend far beyond Khabib’s career, influencing many young fighters from Dagestan and leaving a mark on MMA worldwide.

As Mendez concluded in his emotional post: “Rest in peace, Abdulmanap. Your impact will never be forgotten. Your legacy of champions.”
