UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria has publicly expressed his support for the ongoing protests in Georgia. The unrest began after the Georgian government announced it would delay discussions about joining the European Union until at least 2028.
Topuria, who has Georgian roots, took to Instagram to share his thoughts and criticize the government’s decision.
The protests have been widespread since November 28, 2024, as many Georgians see EU membership as essential for the country’s progress and alignment with Western values. However, the ruling Georgian Dream party caused public outrage with its announcement, leading to nationwide demonstrations.
The protests have turned violent, with tear gas and water cannons used to disperse crowds. Over 200 people have reportedly been arrested, and many protesters have been injured during clashes with police.
Critics believe Georgia’s government is moving toward authoritarianism and strengthening ties with Russia, contradicting the dreams of citizens who strive for a closer relationship with Europe.
Topuria, a superstar in the UFC, did not stay silent during this critical time. On his Instagram story, the undefeated fighter posted:
“My clear support for those protesters who defend our rights. I oppose the decision to suspend our accession negotiations to the European Union. It is shameful to see how the children of Georgia are being treated. This is not freedom. We want the best future for our country. It is necessary to continue our path towards Europe because this is an opportunity for progress for all citizens. Together, we must fight for a democratic and free Georgia.”
Topuria’s comments reflect the anger and determination of many Georgians seeking democracy and human rights. His words come at a time of increased global attention to the country’s unrest. The aggressive police response to the protests has also drawn international criticism.
Topuria, famously nicknamed “El Matador,” is coming off an incredible year in his professional MMA career. Earlier this year, he claimed the UFC featherweight title by stunning Alexander Volkanovski with a knockout.
He then successfully defended the belt by finishing former champion Max Holloway, solidifying his place as one of the sport’s pound-for-pound greats.
While his MMA career reaches new heights, Topuria continues to remind fans of his deep connection to his Georgian heritage and his dedication to advocating for its future.
